    A Brief History of Suburbia

Suburbia is a chain of department stores in Mexico, focused primarily on selling clothing and accessories for the whole family. Its history dates back several decades, marking its presence in the Mexican retail sector.

Suburbia was founded in 1970, with its first store opening in Mexico City. From the outset, it positioned itself as a department store offering a wide range of fashion products at affordable prices, aimed primarily at Mexican families.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Suburbia experienced significant expansion throughout Mexico. It opened new stores in several states, consolidating its presence in the national market.

This expansion was accompanied by a product diversification strategy, including not only clothing, but also footwear, accessories, and eventually small appliances and household items.

Over the years, Suburbia has undergone several corporate changes. Originally part of Cifra, a Mexican company that also had stakes in other big names in retail, Suburbia was affected by Cifra's merger with Walmart de México in 1997. However, Suburbia continued to operate under its own brand.

In 2016, a significant change occurred when Walmart de México announced the sale of Suburbia to El Puerto de Liverpool, one of the largest department store chains in Mexico. This acquisition by Liverpool marked the beginning of a new phase for Suburbia, with a renovation of its stores and increased investment in marketing to attract a wider audience.

Under Liverpool's leadership, Suburbia has sought to modernize and expand its online presence. This includes renovating its physical stores and strengthening its e-commerce platform, seeking to offer a more integrated and convenient shopping experience for consumers.

Half a century ago, Suburbia, the department store chain with the slogan "fashion at the best price," arrived in Mexico with a self-checkout system, mainly with central checkout counters and staff to help you decide on your best purchase, until it evolved with technology to offer a credit card and online shopping.

The company began operations on October 28, 1970, opening its doors in the Taxqueña Shopping Center. The Arango brothers brought fashion to Mexican families through a clothing and accessories department store that was part of the Aurrerá group.
