How it became a franchise and how the name KFC came about

    By Contact Anunciart | Marketing | 0 comment | May 2, 2024 | 0

Harland Sanders, better known as Colonel Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), is one of the most successful stories that has inspired entrepreneurs to generate profits, primarily because success came to him at an advanced age.

We know that KFC is one of the most successful food franchises worldwide, with different products and a secret recipe that has conquered the palates of millions and millions of people around the world. Such is its success that there are franchises all over the world.

But how did the name come about?

Harlan David Sanders, founder of this company, was born in 1890. The roots of KFC began in 1930 at a gas station in Corbin, Kentucky, when Sanders offered homemade dishes that his mother had taught him, including fried chicken.

In 1936, his talent in gastronomy was recognized by the governor of Kentucky, Rubby Laffon, who awarded him the title of "Colonel."

Three years later, critic Dunca Hines took Colonel Sanders' fame to another level when he reviewed his fried chicken.

It took 13 years for Colonel Sanders to open his first franchise in Salt Lake City, Utah. We'll tell you that story shortly.

In 1955, Sanders consolidated his brand by registering "Kentucky Fried Chicken" and patenting his cooking method.

It was at that moment that the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant was formally born.

KFC stands for Kentucky, the state where this type of food originated, while Fried Chicken translates as fried chicken.

How did it become a KFC franchise?

During World War II, gas rationing and the construction of a highway that diverted traffic away from the area threatened the viability of his business. Sanders traveled across the United States franchising his recipe to other restaurants.

The first franchisee, Peter Harman, played a crucial role in the expansion of KFC, convincing other restaurants to add "Kentucky Fried Chicken" to their menus.

Over time, the franchise grew rapidly, with more than 600 outlets in the United States and Canada by 1963.

In light of this growth, Sanders sold a large part of the company to investors and moved to Canada, where he lived until his death in 1980.

This year, KFC is coming to Mexico.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant arrived in Mexico in 1963, and the city chosen was Monterrey, Nuevo León.

This is the story of KFC and how it became a franchise, as well as learning that success can come at any time, regardless of your age or where you are in life.

At first, they never imagined that KFC would become the monster it is today; they even thought it would remain just a homemade fried chicken recipe.

    KFC sales and restaurant figures

According to Statista, global sales for the KFC brand from 2016 to 2022 are as follows:

    • 2016: $23.242 billion
    • 2017: $24.515 billion
    • 2018: $26.239 billion
    • 2019: $27.9 billion
    • 2020: $26.289 billion
    • 2021: $31.365 billion
    • 2022: $31.116 billion

Meanwhile, in the ranking of countries by number of restaurants worldwide at the end of the third quarter of 2023, China is noted to occupy the top position, ahead of the United States and Japan.

Meanwhile, Mexico ranks 12th, below Canada and above the Philippines.

During that semester, KFC had 29,051 stores worldwide.
